Keep ChatGPT ads separate from answers

The advertising announcement described labeled placements, not paid changes to model responses.

OpenAI announced plans to test advertising in January 2026. Its help page dates the start of US testing to February 9. The announcement said ads would be labeled and separated from answers, and that advertising would not influence the answers themselves. [1][2]

The original caption's reference to brands entering conversations could imply sponsored text is blended into a response. That is not how the stated policy describes the placements.

Read the label and the destination

When an ad appears, evaluate the advertiser and its offer separately from the assistant's explanation. Check the destination before sharing information or making a purchase. A relevant placement is not an independent endorsement of the product.

Availability and controls depend on the account and rollout, so use the current help page for your situation. Avoid treating an old announcement as a list of today's eligible plans or countries.

If you build an AI interface with sponsorship, make the distinction visible in the design. Users should be able to tell which content is an answer and which content someone paid to place.
