OpenAI introduced ChatGPT agent on July 17, 2025. It combined web research with actions performed on a virtual computer, including browser interaction, code execution and producing editable files [1].
An answer can become an action
The announcement described tasks such as researching competitors and assembling a slide deck. It brought together capabilities from Operator and deep research so the system could move between finding information and working with it [1].
That shift changes what users need to review. A mistaken paragraph is different from a mistaken change in a connected account.
Keep the task and permissions clear
OpenAI said users could interrupt, take over or stop a task, and that the agent would request permission for consequential actions [1]. Before starting, describe the desired result and which actions require your review. Grant access only to accounts and files needed for the task.
For example, asking for a comparison spreadsheet does not require sending messages to the companies being compared. Review the completed file and its sources before relying on it.
