OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas on 2025-10-21 as a browser with ChatGPT built in. The original announcement now includes a notice that Atlas has been deprecated, so its launch instructions should not be treated as a current installation recommendation. [1]
What the launch added
Atlas brought page context into ChatGPT conversations and offered optional browser memories. Its agent mode could take actions through the browser. OpenAI described controls over page visibility and warned that malicious instructions in web content could cause unintended actions or data exposure. [1]
The social caption framed this as AI replacing traditional search. The announcement established a new way to browse and delegate tasks; it did not demonstrate that search had been replaced.
For any browser assistant you use now, check which pages it can read and which actions it can perform while signed in. Keep sensitive accounts outside its access unless the task requires them, and review the current product's controls rather than relying on an old launch description.
