What Codex CLI brings into the terminal

Start with a small repository task and inspect the changes before accepting an agent’s work.

Codex CLI is OpenAI's coding agent for the terminal. Its repository provides installation instructions and links to the documentation for running it locally [1]. Our original post introduced that open-source command-line tool.

Give it a bounded first task

A useful first request names a file, describes the problem and explains how to check the result. For example: ask it to reproduce a formatting bug with an existing test before proposing the smallest change that fixes it.

That is a suggested workflow, not a claim that the agent will always choose the right fix. Read the changed files and run the relevant checks yourself before accepting the result.

Keep the repository instructions useful

Record how to install dependencies, run tests and start the application. Keep those commands accurate so both people and coding agents can verify changes against the same project behavior.

Use the current official instructions for installation and account access [1]. Avoid copying an old model choice or setup command from a social screenshot when the tool's documentation has moved on.

The terminal interface puts the agent close to your working files. That makes a clean starting state and a reviewable diff useful parts of every task, even when the requested change sounds small.
