What the original Codex cloud preview introduced
The May 2025 agent ran repository tasks in separate cloud environments and proposed changes for review.

OpenAI launched the Codex cloud research preview on May 16, 2025. Each task ran in its own sandbox environment with the user's repository, allowing multiple tasks to proceed in parallel [1].
What a task could produce
The announcement described writing features, fixing bugs, answering repository questions and proposing pull requests. The initial system used codex-1, a version of OpenAI o3 optimized for software engineering [1].
That model name and launch configuration are historical details. They should not be assumed to describe every current Codex product.
Parallel tasks still need review
Independent environments help separate work, but they do not establish that every proposed change fits together. Give each task a clear objective and acceptance criteria, then inspect the resulting diff and relevant checks before merging.
For example, a documentation update and a focused bug fix can be reviewed separately. Two changes to the same interface need a check that their assumptions still agree.
The announcement also recorded later updates to availability and network access [1]. When setting up Codex today, use current documentation for the environment and permissions rather than copying the limits of the original research preview.
