Cognition announced on September 8, 2025 that it had raised over $400 million at a $10.2 billion post-money valuation. Founders Fund led the round. This is the announcement behind the figures in our Instagram post [1].
What the company planned to build
Cognition described two ways developers use AI coding tools: working interactively in an IDE and delegating complete tasks to an agent. It said it would continue investing in both Windsurf and Devin after acquiring Windsurf [1].
The announcement also reported growth in annual recurring revenue. Those were figures supplied by Cognition, rather than an independent product evaluation [1].
What the funding does not establish
A funding announcement explains who backed a company and how that investment valued it at the time. It does not tell you whether its tools will handle your repository well.
For a development team, the useful next question is practical: can the tool complete a representative task, produce a reviewable change and pass the project's checks? Keep that evaluation separate from the size of the funding round.
This article covers the September 2025 announcement. The valuation is a historical figure, not a statement about Cognition's current value.
