Coursera and Udemy announced a definitive merger agreement on December 17, 2025. The proposed combination was an all-stock transaction. The approximately $2.5 billion figure referred to the implied equity value of the combined company, using the previous day's closing share prices. It was not a $2.5 billion cash purchase price for Udemy. [1]
What the announcement covered
The companies described bringing Coursera's university and industry relationships together with Udemy's instructor marketplace. They presented expanded learning options and AI-related skills development as reasons for the combination. Those were plans in the announcement, not a guarantee of any particular learner's outcome. What learners should check
A merger announcement alone does not establish that a course, certificate or subscription has changed. Before buying a course, check the current syllabus, last update, instructor support and access terms on the platform.
For a coding course, look for a project you can complete and explain. The usefulness of that practice matters more than the size of the company offering it.
