Crocodiles belong to a lineage with a long fossil history. The original reel called them living fossils that survived for more than 200 million years. That phrase needs a distinction: ancient crocodile relatives are not the same species as the crocodiles alive today.

Natural History Museum research describes a much more varied past. Crocodile relatives included forms with different diets and habitats, rather than only the largely aquatic predators familiar to us now. [1]

## A familiar shape can hide change

A body plan that looks recognizable does not mean evolution stopped. To understand a living animal's history, researchers compare fossils, anatomy and relationships between species.

The reel celebrates stealth and ambush hunting. Those are useful observations about familiar crocodiles, but phrases such as 'unmatched power' are dramatic descriptions rather than a defined scientific comparison.

When sharing a natural-history clip, identify the species when possible and distinguish a modern animal from its wider ancestral group. Keep the date range attached to the lineage it actually describes. A long evolutionary history becomes more interesting when its changes remain visible.
