Project Suncatcher planned orbital computing tests
Google's early-2027 target concerned two prototype satellites, not a completed orbital data-center network.

Google's Project Suncatcher announcement described research into solar-powered satellites carrying Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs. The proposed network would connect computing hardware in orbit. Its announced next step was a mission with Planet to launch two prototype satellites by early 2027. [1]
A prototype has a narrower purpose
The original social caption can sound like a full orbital data-center deployment was scheduled for 2027. Google's announcement instead described hardware tests and foundational research, including radiation testing and work on communication and satellite control. [1]
That distinction matters when reading infrastructure news. A prototype can answer an engineering question without establishing that a system is commercially practical at scale.
Questions the tests need to answer
For any computing system in a new environment, separate the processor's ability to run from the complete service's ability to operate reliably. Power, communication, maintenance and failure recovery all affect the result.
Treat the announced schedule as a target in that research plan. The announcement alone does not prove that the mission launched or that a production service became available.
