OpenAI released gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b on August 5, 2025 under the Apache 2.0 license. They are open-weight reasoning models that developers can run and adapt outside the ChatGPT service [1].
Weights are not the whole product
Our social caption used the idea of blueprints to explain access. More precisely, the release provides model weights: the learned numerical parameters used during inference. It does not turn a local installation into the complete ChatGPT application.
OpenAI described gpt-oss-120b as able to run on a single 80 GB GPU, while gpt-oss-20b could run with 16 GB of memory. These were deployment targets in the launch announcement [1]. Actual speed depends on the hardware and serving setup.
Local access still needs engineering
Downloading weights avoids requiring an OpenAI API key for a self-hosted runtime. It does not remove the need to install compatible software, supply computing resources and review the license.
Start with a small evaluation workload before integrating the model into an application. Check the answers, tool calls and memory use in your own environment. The useful question is whether that deployment meets your requirements, rather than whether an open-weight release is equivalent to every hosted model.
