Keep a path for junior developers to learn
Matt Garman's interview raises a practical question: how will a team develop experienced engineers if hiring stops?

In a December 2025 WIRED interview, AWS CEO Matt Garman argued against replacing junior engineers with AI. He pointed to their familiarity with the tools and the need to develop future talent through hiring and mentoring. [1]
Keep the claim in context
Garman also expected work to change and acknowledged disruption. His argument for junior hiring was a view about building a durable company, not a promise that every role would remain unchanged. [1]
Make learning visible in the workflow
A practical response is to give junior developers ownership of small changes they can explain. Ask them to describe the failure, review the proposed diff and show the check that demonstrates the fix.
When AI drafts the code, the learning opportunity can still include choosing the test, finding missing cases and discussing tradeoffs with a reviewer. Track whether someone can independently diagnose the next problem, alongside whether the current ticket closes.
That is a team-development choice. The interview does not supply a measured productivity result for your team.
