The July 2025 GenAI Divide report described a gap between enterprise AI spending and measurable business results. Its headline combined an estimated $30-40 billion in investment with a finding that most organizations were seeing no return [1].
What the researchers examined
The report labels itself preliminary research. Its January-June 2025 work included a review of over 300 public AI initiatives, interviews covering 52 organizations and survey responses from 153 senior leaders at industry conferences [1].
Those details matter when reading the strong wording in our Instagram caption. This was research into a sample of enterprise adoption, not an audit proving that every dollar spent on AI produced nothing.
Read the limits alongside the headline
The authors note that their sample may not represent every enterprise segment or region. They also distinguish adoption from business impact [1].
For your own project, define the result before buying or building: fewer correction hours, faster completion of a particular task, or a lower error rate. Measure the existing process first, then compare against it. A tool being widely used does not, by itself, answer whether it improved that process.
