OpenAI's January 2026 science report describes an OpenAI model achieving gold-level performance on the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad problem set [1]. Researcher Alexander Wei's repository publishes proofs produced by the experimental reasoning model during that evaluation [2].

## Read a result through its evidence

Our original post highlighted the score. The proof release gives readers something more useful to inspect: the reasoning submitted for mathematical problems, rather than only a percentage or a promotional description.

Gold-level performance describes an evaluation result. It should not be read as a promise that every model available in ChatGPT will reproduce those proofs or solve every similarly difficult problem.

## Check each step

When using AI for mathematics, ask which assumptions the argument requires and whether each conclusion follows. A convincing final sentence cannot repair an invalid intermediate step.

Published work is useful because someone else can examine it. Compare a proposed solution with the exact problem statement, check special cases and have qualified reviewers examine the argument when correctness matters.

This article records the experimental result and its evidence. It does not claim that we independently regraded the proofs or reproduced the evaluation.
