What PayPal announced for shopping in ChatGPT

PayPal's 2025-10-28 announcement concerned buying products through ChatGPT and processing payments for merchants. It did not establish the social caption's claim that users could immediately pay for all ChatGPT subscription plans through PayPal. [1]

Separate shopping from subscription billing

The announcement said PayPal would adopt the Agentic Commerce Protocol and support OpenAI Instant Checkout. It described bringing merchant product catalogs into ChatGPT commerce in 2026, with PayPal handling payment and merchant-routing functions. These were the announced plans and timing. [1]

Buying a merchant's product through a conversational interface and paying OpenAI for a subscription are separate transactions. Evidence that one supports a wallet does not establish that the other does.

Before paying, check who the seller is, what the order contains and which payment options the actual checkout offers. Use the billing controls for your own subscription to confirm its supported payment methods.
