Our hiring carousel concerned Shengjia Zhao joining Meta's AI leadership. Meta's July 30, 2025 earnings remarks identify Zhao as chief scientist for its new effort [1].
Place the appointment in context
In those remarks, Mark Zuckerberg described Meta Superintelligence Labs as bringing together foundations, product and FAIR teams, alongside a new lab developing the next generation of models. He named Alexandr Wang as overall leader and Nat Friedman as the leader of AI products and applied research [1].
That gives the appointment a more precise meaning than describing one researcher as the sole brain behind a major model. Large model programs involve researchers, infrastructure teams, data work and product decisions.
An appointment is not a capability result
The remarks also describe Meta's ambitions for future systems. Those plans are forward-looking statements, not evidence that a promised capability had already been achieved.
When following AI hiring news, separate the confirmed role from predictions about what the team will produce. Look for released systems, technical reports and evaluations before changing a practical workflow on the strength of an appointment alone.
This article records the role described in Meta's 2025 announcement. It does not claim that the organization or its job titles have remained unchanged since then.
