What space solar power demonstrations actually showed
Separate Japan's aircraft test from Caltech's orbital demonstration and the longer-term goal of usable power.

The original Instagram caption described Japan transmitting electricity from orbit to Earth. The Japanese experiment documented in the linked report used an aircraft. That distinction changes what the demonstration proves. [1]
Identify the transmitting platform
Japan Space Systems' December 2024 report describes wireless power transmission from an aircraft to the ground over roughly five kilometres. Its roadmap treats an orbital demonstration as a separate step. [1]
Caltech reported a different experiment in 2023: its MAPLE hardware demonstrated wireless power transfer in space and sent power that could be detected on Earth. Caltech's announcement identifies its own spacecraft experiment and team. [2]
Separate detection from useful supply
Detecting a transmitted signal establishes an experimental result. Supplying practical electrical power also requires a system that can collect, transmit, receive and convert enough energy for its intended use.
JAXA describes space solar power as an ongoing research programme involving microwave or laser transmission, large structures and other technologies. Its stated practical-application horizon lies in the latter half of this century. [3]
The research is worth following through the experiment reports. The original caption's claim about Japan's orbital first is not supported by these sources.
