What Veo 3.1 added to video generation

The launch introduced reference images, extensions and frame transitions; old preview model names need checking.

Google's 2025-10-15 Veo 3.1 announcement introduced additional controls for generated video, including reference images, scene extension and transitions between supplied first and last frames. Google also described improvements to native audio and prompt following. [1]

Choose the control for the shot

Reference images guide the appearance of a subject or scene. Scene extension generates a continuation from an existing Veo video. First and last frames specify the endpoints of a transition. Those controls address different problems, so choose the one that matches the shot you need. [1]

Review the generated clip for changes to the subject, unintended movement and audio mismatches. A reference image guides generation but does not guarantee that every frame preserves the original design.

The launch used preview model identifiers. Before building an integration, check Google's current video-generation documentation for the supported model and its limits. Keep the approved source artwork separate from generated clips so later edits can start from the same reference.
