What changed in Windsurf’s Claude access in June 2025

The announcement concerned Windsurf’s model capacity, not a shutdown of Claude everywhere.

Windsurf's June 3, 2025 statement said Anthropic had reduced nearly all of its direct capacity for Claude 3.5 Sonnet, 3.7 Sonnet and 3.7 Sonnet Thinking with less than a week's notice [1]. Our social post concerned that disruption inside Windsurf.

What users were told

Windsurf said it had some capacity through other providers, but not enough to cover demand immediately. It removed direct Claude 3.x access for free and trial users while adding a bring-your-own-key option. Claude Sonnet 4 was also available through a user's own key [1].

A July 16 update on the same announcement said paid users again had direct access to Sonnet 4 and its Thinking variant; free users could still use their own key [1]. These are historical changes, not a description of today's plans.

Separate the editor from the model provider

A model appearing in an editor's menu depends on the editor's integration, capacity and account arrangements. A disruption there does not establish that the underlying model has stopped operating everywhere.

Before changing a workflow, identify which layer failed: the editor, its provider connection or your account. If you use your own key, check the provider's billing and permissions separately. Keep an alternative workflow available for essential tasks instead of assuming that one integration will remain unchanged.
