What Willow's Quantum Echoes result demonstrated
Google reported an advantage on a specific quantum calculation, rather than a general replacement for supercomputers.

Google's 2025-10-22 Quantum Echoes announcement reported a calculation on its Willow chip that ran 13,000 times faster than its best classical comparison. That figure applied to the specified algorithm and comparison, rather than every computing problem. [1]
Read what was measured
Quantum Echoes examines how a disturbance spreads through a quantum system. Google described applying operations, perturbing a qubit, reversing the operations and measuring the resulting signal. The company said another quantum computer of sufficient quality could verify the result. [1]
A separate proof-of-principle experiment explored molecular structure using nuclear magnetic resonance data. Google presented this as progress toward useful applications, not evidence that all chemistry calculations had become routine quantum workloads. [1]
When reading a speedup claim, keep the task, hardware and classical comparison together. Ask whether the result covers the full practical workload or a specific calculation within it. A demonstrated advantage becomes more informative when its boundary is clear.
